AM has 22 cases of Omicron; half a million people are behind on their second dose

MANAUS – The Amazon reached this Monday, 10, the total of 22 cases of Omicron, considered the most transmissible variant of Covid-19 and that has worried scientists around the world. The increase of those infected by the new strain comes amidst the large amount of people who have not taken any dose of the vaccine against the virus and those who are late in the second dose of the immunizer.

Altogether, according to the Secretary of Health of Amazonas (SES-AM), Anoar Samad, there are more than 100 thousand manauaras who have not taken any vaccine and more than 500 thousand Amazonas people who have not returned to the health posts to take the booster dose. “More than 100 thousand manauaras have not taken even one dose of vaccine. More than 500,000 Amazonians did not take the second dose”, Samad wrote on Instagram.

In social networks, the secretary made an appeal to the population and asked people to look for a Health unit to get vaccinated. “Seek soon a unit of their prefectures, in Manaus we still have the Sambódromo and the truck of vaccination. Get vaccinated, wear masks, wash your hands frequently and avoid crowds”, asked the secretary.

First case

The first imported case of the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus was confirmed in the Amazon on January 4th. The information was released by the State Department of Health, through the Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP), after receiving a genomic surveillance report issued by the Institute Leonidas and Maria Deane (Fiocruz-Amazon).

According to the FVS-RCP, it is a 27-year-old Brazilian woman, living in São Paulo, who arrived in Manaus from Fortaleza on December 21, with flu symptoms. Upon arrival in the capital, she was collected at the testing station at the Eduardo Gomes International Airport, where she tested positive for Covid-19 and was oriented to home isolation for 14 days.

To CENARIUM MAGAZINE, specialists reinforced the request for the mandatory use of face masks and the respect to all sanitary measures to avoid infection and dissemination of the coronavirus, such as frequently washing hands, using alcohol gel and avoiding crowded places.

The technical director of the Health Surveillance Foundation of Amazonas – Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP), Daniel Barros, highlights that the population needs to follow to the letter all the protection protocols, especially, with the arrival of Omicron, in the State, and the coinfection by coronavirus and Influenza, called ‘flurone’.

For the infectious disease physician Nelson Barbosa, the advance in the number of infections, by Omicron, in Brazil, in the last week of December 2021, and in the first week of this year, serves as an alert for protective measures to be maintained. He points out that vaccination against Covid-19 has been essential to avoid a major tragedy by the virus.

On Monday, 10, Amazonas also reached the total of 435,978 cases of Covid-19 in the state, according to the epidemiological bulletin of FVS-RCP, updated daily. Only in the last 24h, 229 new infected were confirmed.

According to the FVS, Amazonas has 13,849 coronavirus deaths. Among the victims in Manaus, there are 9,518 confirmed deaths due to Covid-19. In the interior, there are 61 municipalities with confirmed deaths so far, totaling 4,331.
