MANAUS – DJ Alok performed at the Global Citizen festival, this Saturday, 25th, with indigenous people of the Yawanawá, Huni Kuin and Guarani ethnic groups. The idea of the live performance was to show a part of the first album developed by the artist in partnership with the indigenous people through ancestral songs of the ancient people.

“We learn that Brazil was discovered in 1500, when, in fact, it was invaded. What I discovered was that for more than 100 years what you did was to help the whites who arrived scourged and sick and cure them. Before the Brazil of the crown, there is the Brazil of the cocar (indigenous headdress)”, said the artist.

Alok was the second to perform with a show recorded in the Amazon, unveiling three songs from the album that is still under construction. “It was magical, I learned that the indigenous songs are the ancestral voices of the forest and in the face of the urgent moment we are living, due to climate change, it is necessary to listen to what the forest has to tell us”, said Alok.

Allied to the indigenous cause

The musician took the opportunity to call attention to respect for indigenous rights. “I serve only as a tool to help bring indigenous voices beyond the village, as part of a commitment in retribution for what these people have historically done to preserve the forests. Respecting them is not an option, but a necessary historical reparation”, the artist pointed out.

In August this year, Alok was present in Brasília to support the “March for Life” mobilization. In addition, the DJ announced the production of a documentary focused on the native people and the link with nature, enabling a more sustainable preservation path. The artist maintains the Alok Institute, which supports and participates in projects aimed at the preservation of indigenous culture.

Global Citizen

The international event was conceived to raise awareness about causes favorable to the environment, with the objective of calling the attention, through art, of leaders and public entities to climate change, hunger, and new financial commitments aimed at more urgent situations.

In all, there will be 24 hours of programming, which began at 1 pm this Saturday the 25th, being broadcast live on Global Citizen’s YouTube channel. Global Citizen mixes previously recorded performances with live performances. There are more than 50 artists on the performance list, which will also be shown on the BIS and Multishow channels, as well as live on Rede Globo, starting at 11pm.
