BR-319 wooden bridge is sawed and makes crossing dangerous; criminal action is investigated

MANAUS – The wooden bridge located at kilometre 515.60 of BR-319, which connects Manaus to Porto Velho, in Rondonia, known as “Cotia Igarapé Bridge”, had the structure surrounded and is causing inconvenience to those who need to travel over the highway. The criminal action happened in the early hours of this Saturday, 26.

In the morning, people passing through the site recorded images of the bridge, which is with part of the structure caved in and other causing risks for those who need to travel through it. The information was released by the group Friends of BR-319. The organization says that since the morning, vehicles risked passing through the site.

“They put two planks there to cross, only, passenger cars, but, for now, the site is impassable”, said André Marsílio, president of the Association of Friends and Defenders of BR-319.

The report of AMAZON AGENCY contacted the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) that reported having already closed the bridge and activated the company responsible for the repairs to be made in an emergency.

History

The action, which still has no identified author, happened in the known “middle stretch”, located between kilometres 250 and 655.7, a central piece in the discussions about paving, and had an Operation License (LO) released by the Environmental Protection Institute of Amazonas (Ipaam), in mid-September.

Two months ago, two other bridges, located outside the middle section, at kilometres 23 and 25 of the highway, collapsed. The first collapse, of the bridge over the Curuçá River, killed four people and left 14 others injured. The second collapse left no injuries.

AMAZON AGENCY showed, this week, that Dnit was warned about the risks of the bridges of BR-319, in a study conducted in 2021. The research was presented during public hearings on the middle stretch, held in 2021, in Manaus. According to the study, there was an incompatibility between the works planned for the recuperation of the highway and the local geographic characteristics.
