MANAUS – Businessmen and lawyers are accusing the governor of Roraima, Antonio Denarium (PP), of doing loan sharking and using a factoring, a type of commercial company, without authorization for financial operations, to make illegal loans. The case was disclosed this Sunday, 22, by Veja magazine, but the complaint was filed at the State Public Ministry (MPE-RR) in 2021.

“His company is a mixture of loan sharking with factoring. What he does is lend money,” said to Veja the lawyer Francistar Salismar, who defended one of the people considered to be victims.

Veja also mentions that a logger, identified as Bruno Queiroz, was the one who presented the criminal notice, in 2021. “According to the businessman, the governor’s company has been acting illegally, as a real bank loan agency, using loan sharking and charging interest rates above those practiced by banks. More than 100 processes of execution of titles are cited, including processes of debt collection from individuals,” says an excerpt of the article.

Governor’s jurisdiction

The denunciation of the logger Bruno Queiroz was analyzed by the prosecutor Andre Paulo dos Santos Pereira, of the MPE-RR, cites Veja. According to the magazine, Pereira saw evidence of irregularities in Antônio Denarium’s financial dealings, conduct that would be linked to public office.

However, because Denarium has a privileged forum, the prosecutor recommended that the case be referred to the Superior Court of Justice (STJ). To Veja, the governor of Roraima, through the advisory, attributed the accusations to political opponents interested in hindering his reelection campaign this year.

In a note to CENARIUM MAGAZINE, Denarium’s counsel also attributed the accusation to “political and electoral issues” and regretted the charges. In the text, it also said that the governor’s business “are all lawful.”

“The advisory board of Governor Antonio Denarium regrets that political and electoral issues are used to hurt the honor and reputation of who for years invests and believes in the growth of the State of Roraima. It also emphasizes that his businesses are all legal, collect taxes and has all the assets declared to the IRS, “said the governor’s advisor, in an excerpt from the note.

The note also classifies the complaint as a “disrespectful strategy” used as a “tool to enhance some names and ‘denigrate’ the images of others. “For Antônio Denarium, politics is serious and should be used to improve people’s lives and not become a big battlefield where the loser is the population,” concluded the advisory, in the note sent to CENARIUM.

The battle to be reelected

Besides legal problems, Antônio Denarium also faces a battle to be reelected. This is because the politician, according to a survey of voter intention to the Government of Roraima, showed, in April this year, that the former mayor of Boa Vista, Teresa Surita (MDB), appears with 64.6% of voter preference, or twice the current governor, who has 32.3%.

The Pontual Institute’s survey, registered in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) under number RR-06836/2022, represents the average of the projection of valid votes for both the capital and the coutryside of the state, with a margin of error of 2.31% more or less and a confidence interval of 95%. The former mayor, however, wins in both surveys.
