MANAUS – Respect to diversity and the debate to guarantee the rights of the LGBTQIA+ population will mark the “State Week of Confrontation to LGBTPhobia”, held from May 16 to 20, in São Luís, capital of Maranhão. The theme of this year’s edition is “LGBTFOBIA is not an opinion, it is a crime! – Approval of the State Plan of Public Policies Now!”.

“The Week has an educational role of promoting debate, reflection, and making it possible to talk about LGBTphobia, about the rights of the LBGTQIA+ community and to discuss mechanisms to confront this violence in Maranhão,” said the holder of the State Secretariat for Human Rights and Popular Participation, Amanda Costa.

The importance of discussing the subject and seeking measures to solve the demands presented by the public is highlighted by the secretary. “This way, we reaffirm our commitment to combat any kind of violence due to sexual orientation and gender identities and foster a culture of peace”.

The event will be held in May in allusion to the World Day of Fight against LGBTPhobia, celebrated on May 17, a date that marks the celebration of the segment’s victories and achievements with the society. The opening of the Week will take place in the capital of Maranhão, on the 16th, at 8:30, at the João Goulart Building Auditorium.

The rest of the Week will take place from the 17th to the 20th, together with civil society organizations, in the cities of Bacabal, Santa Inês, Caxias, Aldeias Altas, Raposa, Cururupu and Pindaré Mirim. The closing will be on the 20th, with the Act of Denunciation Against LGBTPhobia, at 6pm, at the Praça Nauro Machado, in Praia Grande.

The event is organized by the State Secretariat for Human Rights and Popular Participation (Sedihpop), in partnership with the Court of Justice of Maranhão (TJ/MA), through the Diversity Committee; the State Council for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite, and Transgender Rights (CEDLGBT) and the Maranhão State LGBT NGO Forum.
