MANAUS – After the expertise of the Civil Police of Amazonas (PC-AM) find traces of blood on the boat of Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, the “Pelado”, 41 years, the Court of Amazonas (TJAM) decreed, on the night of Thursday, 9, the temporary arrest of man suspected of involvement in the disappearance of indigenist Bruno Pereira, from the National Indian Foundation (Funai), and the British journalist Dom Phillips, collaborator of The Guardian newspaper.

A temporary arrest is of a precautionary nature, that is, a preventive procedure, to conserve or defend rights, and has a term of five days. The measure can be extended for another five days, but in the case of heinous crimes, the period can reach a month.

The decision about Amarildo was made after a custody hearing in the District of Atalaia do Norte (1,138 kilometers from Manaus), and meets the request of the Civil Police of Amazonas. Earlier, the TJAM had denied the false information that the temporary arrest of Pelado had already been decreed and communicated that the hearing on the case was scheduled for 6 pm (Acre time) on Thursday, 9.

Arrest in flagrante

The arrest comes after the suspect was arrested in flagrante delicto with a portion of drugs and ammunition of restricted use. As for the expertise done with the use of luminol, the information about the trace of blood was released on Thursday, 9. According to delegate Alex Perez, from the city of Atalaia do Norte, it remains to be seen whether the material is of human or animal origin.

In addition, reports from a key witness indicate that Amarildo carried a rifle and made a belt of ammunition and cartridges shortly after the indigenist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips left the São Rafael Community bound for Atalaia do Norte, last Sunday morning, 5, when they disappeared.

The case

The case happened on Sunday, 5, after Bruno and Phillips received threats in the field, according to the Union of Indigenous Peoples of Vale do Javari (Univaja). The organization claims that the indigenist was constantly threatened for his work against invaders in the region: fishermen, gold miners and loggers. The journalist, passionate about Brazil, was known for his reports denouncing violations of indigenous rights and was working on a book about the environment.

Since Monday, 6, teams from the Amazonas Secretary of Public Security (SSP-AM), the Univaja and the Brazilian Navy have been searching for the activist and the journalist. The Federal Police and the Army have also sent reinforcements. In addition, the PC-AM has opened a police investigation to investigate the case.
