‘Explosive’ increase in Covid-19 cases makes Ufam suspend application of PSC exams

MANAUS – Considering the explosive increase of confirmed cases and the high transmissibility of the Ômicron variant of Covid-19, both in the capital and in the countryside of the State the acting rector of the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam), Professor Therezinha Fraxe, suspended the realization of the tests of the Continuous Selective Process (PSC). The ordinance No. 125 was published on the afternoon of Thursday, 20.

Students in the first and second year of high school were preparing to take the test on January 30. But, according to the document, the decision establishes a deadline of 30 days for the effectiveness of the determinations, which can be extended by an act of the competent administrative authority.

Remote activities

In another ordinance, also published on Thursday, 20, the Ufam determines that for a period of 30 days, the activities relevant to the areas of Teaching, Research and Extension are performed primarily remotely, excluding those considered essential in each area, which should be defined by the respective councils.

In addition to also determining that the administrative activities should preferably be carried out remotely, observing the essential situations, which should be evaluated and defined by the pro-rectorships, supplementary organs and academic units. 

There is also the temporary suspension of all and any type of face-to-face activities that promote crowding within the University. The services and activities considered essential will be preserved.

Omicron predominates

On Wednesday, 19th, Amazonas registered 7,505 new cases of Covid-19, the highest number of confirmed cases in a single day, since the beginning of the pandemic in the state. In all, there are 464,913 registered cases of the disease. On the same day, the Amazonas State Department of Health (SES-AM) and the Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation – Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP) confirmed the predominance in 93% of Omicron in the confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Amazonas.

The confirmation occurred after a Genomic Surveillance report produced by the Instituto Leônidas e Maria Deane (Fiocruz Amazônia), sent to the FVS-RCP. From the 589 samples processed, 547 cases of infection were confirmed by the Omicron lineage of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), 504 of them in Manaus, 24 from the interior of Amazonas, and 19 from other states.
