VILHENA (RO) – Shouting, the state lawmaker Geraldo da Rondônia (PSC), representative of one of the states of the Legal Amazon that deforests the biome, positioned himself against the environmental inspection agencies in a completely disrespectful and rude way. The statements that will be investigated by the State Public Ministry (MP-RO) were made by him last Sunday, May 1st, in Jacinópolis, a district of Nova Mamoré (RO), 280 kilometers from Porto Velho. The stage couldn’t have been more opportune: a public hearing on land regularization.

“Let’s agree on something? When [the inspection] comes, you use my name. Call me. My phone will be there, afterwards, with my son. I’m going to help them set their trucks on fire! We will set fire to their vehicles, to the cars of the inspection agencies I have 50 processes, one more, one less (…) I will not let you down!“, shouted the lawmaker.

Geraldo da Rondônia also encouraged the ruralists and other participants in the public hearing to create a kind of resistance against environmental inspection. “Let’s agree on one more thing: let’s make a manifesto to not let them come here to our region (…) so that they don’t come here and stab us in the face with their fingers”, continued the lawmaker, to the applause of the crowd.

MP investigates conduct against agencies

In a note, the Public Ministry of Rondônia informed that “it will investigate the deputy’s conduct, in the referred video”, a task that will be in charge of the Environmental Prosecutor, still according to the MP-RO.

ALE-RO condemns

The state lawmaker’s speech was criticized by the Legislative Assembly of Rondônia (ALE-RO): “we do not agree”.

“It is an individual thought that does not translate the thought of the House of Laws, which held a public hearing with the objective of promoting debate and finding solutions, within a dialogue with all those involved: the community, the institutions, and the representative bodies. It was an unfortunate speech and we don’t agree”, wrote the president of the Assembly, Alex Redano (Republicanos), in a note.

Lawmaker Geraldo da Rondônia did not respond to CENARIUM’s attempts of contact and questions sent to his personal e-mail. Also contacted by the report, the political party’s advisory ignored the messages.

Under pressure, Geraldo da Rondônia manifested only through a social network. He blamed the media for the repercussion and said that the speech “is being used only as a way to recriminate him”. “I used emotion to have my voice echoed about the right to work and to produce, so that the authorities actually look at them and understand the urgency and the need to regulate. They cannot be treated as thugs, inconsequential invaders,” he wrote.

Contradiction and short memory

For the president of the ALE-RO, the position of his benchmate was only an “isolated speech”, but the facts are that the two have been working tirelessly, together with the governor of Rondônia, the military Marcos Rocha (PSL), to destroy the environment of the region and benefit large cattle ranchers.

Before presenting the bill that became state law, Alex Redano held a public hearing to hear the miners in the Legislative Assembly (Reproduction/ALE-RO)

In this same hearing, held last Sunday, Geraldo da Rondônia defended the idea of prohibiting the destruction of machinery used in environmental crimes, collected by law enforcement agencies. This was the agenda of Law number 5.299, proposed by Redano in December 2021, with Geraldo voting in favor, and sanctioned in January this year by Rocha.

The project created to serve the miners was the target of a Direct Unconstitutionality Action (ADI) requested by the MP-RO. The device, however, remains in force. Therefore, the loss of validity now depends on the Court of Justice of Rondônia (TJ-RO).
