Lula completes first government line-up with 11 female ministers; see the names announced

MANAUS – President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) announced on Thursday, 29, the names of 14 new ministers, as well as the heads of Institutional Security and Social Communication. He also confirmed the names of the government leaders in the House of Representatives, the Federal Senate and the National Congress. Of the 37 high-ranking ministers, 11 are women.

The ceremony took place at the Brazil Bank Cultural Center (CCBB), in Brasilia. In this last announcement, Lula gave space to three centre parties that he hopes to have in his support base in Congress: PSD, MDB and União Brasil.

Some of the most expected names were confirmed: Marina Silva, for the Environment; Sonia Guajajara, for the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples; and Simone Tebet, for Planning. “After intense work, after much tension, after much conversation and much adjustment, we have finished assembling the government’s first line-up”, said the president-elect.

  • Ministry of Tourism: Daniela Souza Carneiro;
  • Cabinet of Institutional Security: General Gonçalves Dias;
  • Secretariat of Social Communication: Paulo Pimenta;
  • Government leader at the House of Representatives: José Guimarães;
  • Government leader in the Senate: Jaques Wagner;
  • Government leader in the National Congress: Randolfe Rodrigues.

Lula also said that he will announce the second line of the federal government after the inauguration. He promised that the state-owned banks Caixa Econômica Federal and Banco do Brasil will be headed by women and that the institutions for the rights of indigenous peoples, such as Funai and Sesai, will be headed by indigenous people.
