Success in the 1970s with Amazonian carimbó, Eliana Pittman recalls her career with an iconic video

MANAUS – The Brazilian singer and actress Eliana Pittman, known as the “Queen of Carimbó” in the 1970s, recalled the trajectory of success around the world by publishing, on social networks, an iconic video of her in Spain. Singing “Ô lêlê, ô lalá. I mixed carimbó and siriá. Carimbó, sirimbó is delicious. It is delicious in Belém do Pará“, the artist was performing in the show “Esta noche…fiesta“, hosted by the journalist José María Íñigo, broadcasted by RadioTelevisión Española (RTVE).

“One more present I receive. Another beautiful picture of me in the 1970s, in Spain, singing carimbó. I love when these surprises appear,” wrote the singer on social networks, celebrating the memory of 1977, when the song “Mistura de Carimbó” became known worldwide.

Queen of carimbó

Elegant and always empowered, Eliana Pittman was born in Rio de Janeiro, on August 14, 1945. Alongside her stepfather, American jazz saxophonist and clarinetist Booker Pittman (1909 – 1969), the artist began her career as a singer in 1961, with jazz and bossa nova shows in the city of Rio de Janeiro, but soon became one of the biggest names in Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) and gained international fame as the only Brazilian to appear on the cover of Ebony magazine, the largest magazine in the United States dedicated to black people.

With her successes “Das Duzentas para Lá, Abandono”, “Sinhá Pureza” and “Mistura de Carimbó”, Eliana has done shows all over the country and abroad, in the United States, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Portugal, Venezuela, Spain, and Mexico. The artist has performed with Vinícius de Moraes, Martinho da Vila, Gilberto Gil, Chico César, Cazuza, Tom Jobim, Edu Lobo, and Luiz Gonzaga, among others.

After 17 years without recording, the singer released, in 2019, the album ‘Ontem, Hoje e Sempre’, from the Kuarup label. In the album, Eliana Pittman mixes the past and the present with ten unreleased recordings, plus eight tracks from a presentation of hers, in 1970, in the Parisian nightclub Dom Camillo.

Besides being a singer, the artist has worked in films and soap operas on TV Globo, such as “Malhação” in 1995, “América” in 2005, “Tempos Modernos” in 2010, and “Sangue Bom” in 2013. On Netflix, Eliana Pittman is participating in the second season of the series “Coisa Mais Linda” (2020), where she plays Elza Ferreira, mother of Capitão (Ícaro Silva) and mother-in-law of Adélia (Pathy Dejesus).
