MANAUS – Family members of the Kaiowá Márcio Moreira, indigenous leader murdered during an ambush in Amambaí, in Mato Grosso do Sul, “are starving and in a situation of misery”. The complaint was made by the Great Guarani and Kaiowá Assembly (AtyGuasu) on Tuesday, 26.

In a video posted on AtyGuasu’s profile, Márcio’s mother, together with the indigenous man’s two daughters, speaks in their native language about the difficulties they have been experiencing since the Kaiowá’s murder and ask for emergency support to survive, as the caption posted by the institution highlights.

“Urgent! At the request of the mother and the surviving daughters of the leadership in memoriam Márcio Moreira, murdered in the resumption Tekoha Guapo’y Mitrim Tujury-Amambai-Ms, we posted a campaign for emergency support to the surviving children in a situation of misery”, reads an excerpt from the caption.

The urgent request comes more than 10 days after the indigenous leader was killed during the retaking of the Tekoha Guapo’y Mirim Tujury-Amambai which has been taking place since the beginning of the year in conflict with ranchers and the MS Military Police. Márcio was shot to death on July 14, during an ambush in the region close to where the conflicts take place. The victim was accompanied by four other Kaiowá indigenouS.

Apathy

Since the beginning of the confrontations almost three months ago, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has not spoken out about the cases, despite pressure from activists and the native peoples of the region. On social networks, indigenous people and activists have constantly spoken out, demanding actions from the federal government and national press coverage of the situation that became known as the “Guapo’y Massacre”, with attacks that have lasted for months in the territory, as shown in the report by Amazon Agency.

In June, AMAZON AGENCY published an article in which it addressed the attacks on indigenous people and recalled that violence is not something new in the region. The territory has already been the stage of other cases against a people tired of the omission of the federal government regarding the agenda.

“In the face of these situations, the government is omission, but let’s remember that Bolsonaro had already defended from the beginning of his campaign that he would not demarcate any centimeter of indigenous land. The situation of the Kaiowá relatives is a reflection of the non-approval of indigenous lands in Brazil. This decline is causing our own relatives to raise their hands and take up this process of resuming the demarcation, since FUNAI has been scrapped”, considered indigenous and anthropologist Tarisson Nawa, in an interview with AMAZON AGENCY.
