MANAUS – The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, said during deliberative session held on Tuesday, 3, that the federal government has not fulfilled the agreement signed with the Amazon bench, after publishing consecutive government decrees in which the products of the Manaus Free Trade Zone were penalized with the reduction of IPI.

“I am a witness of the agreement established on that occasion. I can affirm that in relation to this point, in the non-exceptionalization of the IPI reduction decree, to this PPB system of the Manaus Free Trade Zone, there was a flagrant breach of agreement,” said Pacheco after a speech by Senator Plínio Valério, who presented harsh criticism of the Bolsonaro government.

Favorable to the reduction of IPI in the rest of the country, the Senate President stated that guaranteeing the rights of the Manaus Free Trade Zone would not cause harm to Brazil, because defending the processes of the ZFM is defending Brazilian industry, since it is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.

“There was a commitment to exceptionalize the products produced from the basic production system, the PPB, in the Manaus Free Trade Zone, precisely so that a flagrant damage would not be generated to an entire state, to a city like Manaus, and to the Amazonian people,” he explained.

Action

Pacheco goes further and promises to act so that the decree undergoes changes that ensure legal certainty to the FTZ. “I affirm to the Amazonian bench of this my commitment, in the presidency of the Senate, to shoulder ourselves within this legitimate, fair purpose of establishing this exceptionalization in relation to the Manaus Free Trade Zone. Therefore, I will take care of making these notes to the Ministry of Economy, together with the federal government, so that we may eventually have the correction of this distortion”.

Finally, Rodrigo showed solidarity with the message directed to the Amazonian population. “Know, all Amazonians, that you have in the presidency of the Senate someone with solidarity and together, to be able to make this confrontation, which I repeat, is fair to the Brazilian industry,” he finished.

Meeting

Also this Tuesday, the Amazon bench, composed by Senator Omar Aziz and Federal Lawmaker Marcelo Ramos, will be meeting with the Minister of the Supreme Court, Alexandre de Moraes, to solve the issues related to the governmental decrees that penalize the Manaus Free Trade Zone.
