VILHENA (RO) – It was in jest that the City Hall of Vilhena, (city that recorded the lowest temperature in the entire state of Rondônia in this new cold wave that crosses Brazil) decreed the “optional shower” to municipal servers. The most populous city in the Southern Cone region recorded a minimum of 9ºC this Thursday morning, the 19th, considered to be the coldest of the year, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

The publication, signed by the “City Hall intern”, amused Internet users on the social networks of the public administration: “Whew, it’s a good thing it wasn’t the mayor who signed it,” joked one follower. “Good for you, intern”, celebrated another internet user.

Cold in Rondônia

In the state that is part of Legal Amazonia, the phenomenon is known as coldness. Last year, Vilhena even registered a minimum temperature of 7.5ºC, during the passage of another polar air mass.

For this cold front, which arrived first in the South and Southeast, due to the combination of a cold air mass and an extratropical cyclone, the Amazon Protection System (Sipam) forecasts low temperatures for Rondônia.

According to Sipam, the cold spell in the state will continue until at least next Sunday, 22. This Friday, the 20th, Vilhena should have a minimum of 11ºC and a maximum of 25ºC. On Sunday, the thermometers may vary between 16ºC and 30ºC.

Warm Clothing Campaign

Despite the relaxation, the Vilhenense Executive is treating the cold weather with due seriousness towards the poor. Through the Secretariat of Social Assistance (Semas), the city government collects and donates clothes for homeless people. The population supplies the stocks with blankets, sweaters, jackets, caps, gloves, and other items.

“The team from the Specialized Social Assistance Reference Center (Cras) did this work on the cold night of Tuesday the 18th, helping several people who might have suffered with this sudden cold front. We have received, so far, about 30 donations and we will continue collecting the cold protection items to be able to serve those who need it most,” commented the municipal secretary of Social Assistance, Lucélia Vargas.

The campaign began in early May and also serves other people in social vulnerability already accompanied by Semas. To contribute, citizens can leave the coats in two collection points, Monday through Friday, from 7am to 1pm: the headquarters of Semas, located at Avenida Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes, No. 921, Jardim Eldorado neighborhood, and in Cras, this one at Rua Rio Grande do Norte, No. 1950, Sector 19.
